An Omega Type K (Chromel/Alumel) Thermocouple Sensor with PTFE (Teflon) insulation is a highly popular, general-purpose temperature sensor engineered for environments requiring high chemical resistance, moisture protection, and flexibility. While the base Type K alloys can withstand extreme temperatures from -200°C up to 1250°C, the addition of a PTFE outer jacket limits the sensor's functional operating range to a maximum of 200°C to 260°C.
Specifications
- Conductor Material: Chromel (Nickel-Chromium positive leg) paired with Alumel (Nickel-Aluminum negative leg).
- Insulation Material: PTFE / Teflon (excellent for resisting acids, oils, solvents, and water ingress).
- Temperature Limits: Typically rated for continuous use from -200°C to +200°C (up to 260°C for short bursts depending on the exact wire gauge).
- Accuracy Standard: Standard limits of error are ±2.2°C or ±0.75%, while Special Limits of Error (SLE) achieve ±1.1°C or ±0.4%.

Determine the Wire Gauge (AWG)
The thickness of the internal wire dictates the balance between speed and durability:
- Fine Wire (30 to 40 AWG): Ultra-fast response times (milliseconds). Ideal for precise laboratory testing or small spaces. They are fragile.
- Standard Wire (20 to 24 AWG): The industry standard. Offers a good balance of fast response, physical strength, and ease of handling.
- Heavy Wire (14 to 18 AWG): Slowest response time, but highly rugged and durable for heavy industrial routing.

If you choose a sheathed probe design, select how the sensor junction interacts with the outer metal sheath: Type K
Identify the Connector Type
- Miniature Connector (SMPW): Features two flat pins. This is the most common standard for handheld meters and data loggers.
- Standard Connector (OSTW): Features two round, larger pins. Used for heavy-duty industrial panels.
- Stripped Leads: Bare wires with no connector. Best for wiring directly into screw terminals on a PLC or temperature controller

The A&D AD-5601A thermometer is fully compatible with the Omega K-Type PTFE Thermocouple Sensor. The AD-5601A features an industry-standard SMPW-style input port (with a 7.9mm center pin spacing), allowing you to plug the Omega miniature thermocouple connector directly into the top of the meter.
