HH-V400 Hardmatic

The Mitutoyo HH-V400 Hardmatic (specifically model 810-306, also known as "Pocket Vick") is a cordless, rebound-type portable Leeb hardness tester designed for rapid, on-site metal testing. Acting as the direct successor to the popular Mitutoyo HH-411, it features a completely overhauled color LCD display and streamlined data management system to easily test large or immovable workpieces like bridges, pipes, and large gears.
Features
  • Upgraded Color Interface: Equipped with a 2.83" RGB color LCD screen that vastly improves readability in harsh field lighting compared to previous generations.
  • Omnidirectional Correction: Built-in automatic angle correction compensates for gravity, allowing accurate testing at any orientation (vertical, horizontal, or upside down) with a single click.
  • Smart Detector Swapping: The software automatically recognizes connected impact devices. No tedious manual recalibration or adjustment is required when switching probes.
  • Robust Data Logging: Saves up to 1,800 test results with automatic date and timestamps, grouped across up to 100 sample groups for onboard statistical analysis.
  • Eco-Friendly Power: Built-in rechargeable Ni-MH battery yields up to 8 hours of continuous field operation from a quick 100-minute charge.
The Mitutoyo HH-V400 Hardmatic is primarily used for on-site metal hardness testing of large, heavy, or permanently installed components that cannot be moved to a traditional benchtop laboratory tester. Relying on the Leeb rebound method, its portability and integrated 360-degree automatic angle correction make it highly effective for heavy industries, field infrastructure, and shop-floor manufacturing. Industrial Applications
    • Large-Scale Infrastructure & Field Inspection: Testing structural steel, support pillars, framework, and bridge girders where taking a physical sample is impossible.
    • Heavy Machinery Maintenance: Inspecting installed industrial components like large gears, crankshafts, turbines, and engine blocks for wear or heat degradation.
    • Pipelines, Pressure Vessels, & Boilers: Measuring the integrity of gas, oil, or chemical piping, wall profiles, and large pressure storage tanks.
    • Foundries & Forging Operations: Conducting fast quality control on massive raw castings, forged blocks, or hot-rolled steel plates directly on the factory floor.
    • In-Service Aerospace & Rail Maintenance: Checking safety-critical structures like railway tracks, wheelsets, and heavy aircraft components for fatigue.
Application Matching by Detector Type
    • Standard D-Type Detector: Best for general-purpose testing on large, flat, or flatly curved open metal surfaces.
    • DC-Type Detector: Tailored for confined spaces and internal surfaces, such as inside small pipes or bored cylinders.
    • D+15-Type Detector: Features a narrow face for measuring gear teeth profiles, concave shapes, and bearings.
    • DL-Type Detector: Outfitted with a long, needle-like tip for tight angles, weld corners, and narrow gear roots.
Critical Application Limits
  • Mass & Weight: Components must weigh at least 5 kg. Lightweight or thin parts absorb the impact energy instead of rebounding it, causing false low readings.
  • Material Thickness: The sample must be at least 5 mm thick. (Thinner parts require a rigid backup plate and coupling paste to test properly).
  • Surface Roughness: The surface finish must be smoothed to a roughness of Ra 2.0 or less. Scaled, heavily oxidized, or rough surfaces dissipate the impact force and distort the test results.
  • Point Spacing: Measurements must be taken at least 5 mm away from edges and at least 3 mm away from any prior test indents.
Specification Scale : Leeb Hardness (100.0 to 999.9 HLD) Convertible Scales : Vickers (HV), Brinell (HB), Rockwell (HRC / HRB), Shore (HS), and Tensile Strength (MPa) Material : PresetsIron/Steel, Alloy Tool Steel, Gray Cast Iron, Aluminum, Brass, and more Standard Detector : Type D (General-purpose, carbide ball tip)Sample Requirements Minimum thickness of 5 mm; Minimum mass of 5 kg (thinner parts require a rigid coupling support) Surface Finish : Surface roughness must be Ra 2.0 or less Data Output : USB connection; fully compatible with Mitutoyo U-WAVE wireless transmitters and MeasurLink 11 software
