Why Should You Measure Viscosity? Gathering viscosity data on a material gives manufacturers the ability to predict how the material will behave in the real world. For example: if toothpaste does not have the correct viscosity, it can either be too difficult to pump out from the tube, or pump out too much. Knowing the viscosity of a material also affects how the production and transportation processes are designed.  The Bostwick Consistometer is the preferred choice for measuring consistency and flow rate in a variety of products. You can use the "Bostwick" on any viscous material such as sauces, salad dressings, paints, chemicals, or cosmetics. The normal way to use the Consistometer is to measure the distance a sample flows in a given time interval. A measured sample (up to 100ml), is placed in the reservoir behind the gate of the consistometer. 2. The gate is released, by pressing the lock release lever - the spring action ensures it opens instantaneously. 3. As the fluid flows down the instrument its progress can be accurately measured using the graduated scale. By comparing the flow rate to specified time periods the physical properties of the sample can be calculated.
