Böttcher rollers
Böttcher rollers are high-performance industrial components used primarily for metering, distributing, and transferring liquids (like ink, water, or coatings) in various manufacturing processes.
Böttcher provides a comprehensive roller replacement service through two primary programs: the Exchange Program for immediate needs and the Recover Program for refurbishing your specific roller cores.
Roller Exchange Program: This is the fastest way to replace worn rollers. Böttcher maintains a global stock of over 80,000 press-ready rollers.
- How it works: You order a new roller using a Böttcher article number (e.g., beginning with 090 or 095). A press-ready roller with a high-quality, pre-tested core is shipped to you immediately.
- Core Credit: You return your old, worn-out rollers to a local Böttcher representative or service center ( Semiki) If the core passes inspection (measures for diameter, length, and tolerances), a credit is applied to your account.
- Benefit: Eliminates machine downtime and the need for you to store large inventories of rollers.
Roller Recover Program: This service is used when you want to keep your original equipment cores or for specialized industrial rollers.
- Process: You send your worn rollers to a Böttcher factory. They strip the old rubber, inspect the metal core for damage, and then apply a fresh rubber or polyurethane compound tailored to your specific application.
- Precision: The rollers are re-ground and profiled to ensure they meet original manufacturer tolerances.
Logistical Support: In many regions, Böttcher operates a unique Pick-up and Delivery Service.
- Service Drivers: Regularly visit customer sites to provide a constant stock of exchange rollers and chemicals.
- Waste Removal: Drivers can also pick up worn rollers for recovering and accept empty chemical containers for proper disposal

Applications
- Offset Printing: They serve as inking rollers to distribute paste ink and dampening rollers to transfer fountain solution. They are standard original equipment for major press manufacturers like Heidelberg and Koenig & Bauer.
- Flexography & Rotogravure: Used as metering rollers, coating rollers, and draw rolls to handle fluid inks and coatings on various substrates like plastic film or labels.
- Industrial Processing:
- Plastics: Used for film extrusion, PVC floor processing, and laminating.
- Wood & Furniture: Used for applying lacquers, oils, and adhesives to wood surfaces.
- Textiles: Used as drawing or squeezing rollers in high-temperature or chemical-heavy environments.
- Metal & Solar: Employed in metal coil coating and solar cell production.
- Chemical Resistance: Specialized rubber and polyurethane compounds are designed to resist specific solvents, UV inks, or vegetable-based oils without swelling or shrinking.
- Precision Transfer: They ensure a consistent coating weight and uniform ink distribution across the entire surface.
- Durability: Engineered to withstand high production speeds and reduce heat build-up, which prevents the rollers from overheating and failing prematurely.
Böttcher ( Boettcher) rollers are specified based on three main criteria: Shore A hardness, rubber compound type, and machine-specific geometry. Because they are often OEM-standard components for brands like Heidelberg and Komori, their physical dimensions (length, diameter, and wall thickness) are typically built to match the original press manufacturer's requirements.
Hardness Specifications (Shore A): Hardness is the most critical variable, determined by the roller's position and the fluid being transferred.
- Inking Rollers: Generally ranges from 25 to 40 Shore A. Common series like the 79 Series are available in precise steps: 25, 30, 35, and 40 Shore A.
- Dampening Rollers: Typically softer, ranging from 25 to 30 Shore A to ensure uniform water film.
- Industrial/Heavy Duty: Specialized rollers for metal or plastics can range much higher, from 50 to 100 Shore A using ribbon-flow technology.
- Rotogravure Impression: Uses harder compounds, often between 70 and 95 Shore A.
Common Compound Series: Compounds are selected based on the chemical environment (inks, solvents, or UV coatings).
- 79 Series: The most widely used compound for conventional offset inking.
- Chameleon (171/471 Series): Designed for "mixed-mode" or dual-purpose printing, allowing a switch between UV and conventional inks without changing rollers.
- ProAqualis (128/124 Series): Specialized for dampening systems, offering high resistance to swelling in alcohol-free environments.
- BöttcherTec Si: Silicone-based compounds for industrial rollers requiring high temperature resistance (up to 200–230°C) and anti-adhesive properties.
Technical Tolerances
- Geometrical Precision: Precision-ground to ensure uniform "nips" (the contact area between rollers) across the entire width, which prevents color variation.
- Surface Finish: Standard roughness (Ra) typically ranges between 0.4 and 0.7 µm for high-precision printing.
- Dimensions: Custom manufactured for widths up to 8 meters for wide-format or industrial applications.
