The iButton® temperature logger (DS1925) is a rugged, self-sufficient system that measures temperature and records the result in a protected memory section. The recording is done at a user-defined rate. A total of 122K 8-bit readings or 61K 16-bit readings taken at equidistant intervals ranging from 5min to 273hrs can be stored. In addition, there are 512 bytes of nonvolatile memory for storing application-specific information. A mission to collect data can be programmed to begin immediately, after a user-defined delay, or after a temperature alarm. Access to the memory and control functions can be password protected.

To set up and launch a mission on an Analog Devices Thermochron iButton, you need a 1-Wire hardware adapter, a receptor cable, and the 1-Wire Viewer software The device setup requires software and an interface adapter, as the Analog Devices iButton Quick Start Guide explains: “To view data from an iButton... you must first connect it to your PC using a 1-Wire adapter and a reader/receptor.”

1. Download and Install the Software

Download 1-Wire/iButton Drivers for Windows

- Download the 1-Wire Drivers and 1-Wire Viewer bundle from the Analog Devices 1-Wire Software Page.
- Run the installer matching your OS architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
- Complete the wizard to load the serial/USB drivers onto your PC.

2. Connect the Hardware

- Insert your DS9490R# USB adapter into an open USB port on your PC.
- Plug the RJ11 connector of the DS1402D-DR8+ Blue Dot Receptor cable into the USB adapter.
- Snap your iButton into the receptor cup with the metal lid facing up.

3. Initialize the 1-Wire Viewer

- Launch the 1-Wire Viewer application.
- Select USB as your port type and DS9490 as your adapter if prompted during startup.
- Look at the left panel to find the unique 64-bit registration ID of your iButton.
- Click on the ID to view the device tabs (e.g., Description, Clock, Mission).

4. Configure and Launch the Mission

- Click on the Mission tab in the main window.
- Click Start New Mission to open the wizard setup screen.
- Synchronize the iButton's clock to your PC system time to ensure accurate time stamping.
- Set the Sample Rate (how often it records, from minutes to hours).
- Define the Start Delay if you want logging to begin at a specific future time.
- Select your Resolution (8-bit or high-resolution 16-bit) and toggle alarms if needed.
- Click Finish or Load Mission to write the configuration and clear any old data.

5. Deploy the iButton

Remove the iButton from the blue dot receptor.
Mount it in its tracking environment using a wall mount plate or an adhesive fob.
